6.4.8.1 Import Wizard, The Source Page

Use the controls on this page to specify an import file name, data type, target template and import filter. This page is common to all Data Types: ASCII, Binary and User-Defined. Note that the availability of some controls is dependent upon other settings made on this page. Therefore, it is advised that you proceed systematically through this dialog box, from top to bottom.

ASCII files, including those that contain Extended ASCII characters.

To import data that has been copied to the Clipboard, select the Clipboard radio button.

Import Filter

List Filters Applicable to both Data Type and File Name

If this checkbox is cleared, all filters that are applicable to Data Type are displayed in the Import Filters for Current Data Type drop-down list.If this checkbox is selected, the Import Filters for Current Data Type drop-down list will display only those filters conforming to the Specify Data File Names... specification on the Save Filters page of the Import Wizard (includes filters which conform by means of a wild card specification).

Import Filters for Current Data Type

The Import Filters for Current Data Type drop-down list shows all the filter files (.OIF) that are in:

  • The same subfolder as the data file. These filter names are prefixed with the Data Folder tag.
  • The \Filters subfolder of the User Files path. These names are prefixed with the User Files Folder tag.
  • The \Filters subfolder under the Origin program directory. These names are prefixed with the Origin Folder tag.
Description

This non-editable text box lists any descriptive text that was entered in the Filter Description field on the Save Filters page of the Import Wizard, at the time of filter (.OIF) creation.

Target Window

Target Window

Specify a Target Window -- Worksheet, Matrix, or None -- for the data import.

Template

Name the Template to be used in creating new windows. New windows are created:

  • During drag-and-drop operations.
  • When Using the File: Open menu command to open data files.
  • As required by the Import Mode drop-down setting (see next).

If no template is specified, the Origin default workbook or matrixbook template <default> is used (this would be the workbook or matrixbook that is opened from the New... buttons on the Standard toolbar).

If <clone> is selected as Template, current workbook or matrixbook will be used as template for importing new files.

If a filter exists for the named file type and the filter has a template specification, then new windows are created using the template specified in the Import Filters for Current Data Type drop-down list.

Import Mode

The Import Mode drop-down control determines where imported data are written (consistent with Target Window and Template specifications).

Data are imported into the active window when Import Mode is set to Replace Existing Data or Start New Sheets/Columns/Rows.

Data are imported into new windows, created using the named Template when Import Mode is set to Start New Book and the active window is not empty or is not of the Target Window type.
