4.1.1 The New Workbook dialog
The New Workbook dialog is used to control the behaviors of creating new workbook window when startup Origin or new a project, including which template you desires to use and how to construct the columns.
By default, this dialog is forbidden to show up on startup Origin or new a project(system variable @DNB=0). But you can always open it by selecting File: New: Workbook menu.
If you want to open this dialog when startup Origin or new a project, you can:
@DNB=0; in Command window or Script Window.
- Select File: New: Workbook menu to open the New Workbook dialog, check the check box Show on startup and new project and click OK button to save the setting.
- New a project or restart Origin, this dialog will pop up automatically.
Please note, if you have set the New Workbook dialog popping up automatically when startup Origin or new a project, the Learning Center will be prevented from showing up at that time.
System Templates tab
All available built-in workbook templates(*.otwu), workbook windows(*.ogwu) or analysis templates(*.ogwu) will listed in this tab with their previews. Hover your cursor over them to see the details(the file name and description if existing) of the templates in the hints.
By default, the workbook window Blank Workbook(the file Origin.otwu) has been set as default template, with the green hook tag, which means a workbook with one two-columns sheet will be generated when you launch Origin or new a project/workbook. Of course, you can click on another template's preview icon and then check the Set as Default Template check box to set it as the default template instead.
Please note, the system template Blank Workbook will be always listed at the first cell even if it was not the default template. Once you set another system template(not Blank Workbook) as default template, the selected template will be put to the second cell, with the tag(green hook) of default template, when you launch New Workbook dialog again.
User Templates tab
This tab is used to organize the user-saved workbook files, workbook templates and analysis templates. All template files stored in the User Files folder will be listed here by default, with the order of last modified time.
For a group user, there will have an additional switch Group at the right-top corner. Once this switch been turned on, the templates in the Group Folder will also be listed, but with a suffix "(group)" after the display name, such as the forth template above.
You can also load other template files by clicking on the Add button and browse to the target folder to select the otwu and ogwu files.
Hover your cursor on one of the templates, two buttons will appear on the top-right corner of the template icon. Click the Edit button to open the Edit dialog to modify the description or preview.
In the Description box, you can enter a string to describe the function/feature of the template file.
If you want to change the display name of the template icon(by default, the file name will show at that place), enter <show name><space>-<space><description> in the the box, such as "Fit Peaks with PA - Find and Fit Hidden Peaks", then the part before the dash will be token as display name; the one after the dash will be treated as the detailed description for the tooltip.
In the Preview box, you can click on the button to browse the image file which you want to show as preview for current template.
Since Origin 2019, when you save a template file, the preview image(the snapshot of current active window) will be saved together with the template file. That means all these templates will have their default preview image.
For the earlier version, template files have no corresponding preview images, and the icons of loaded templates will show as blank with a general tip(just as the fifth template listed in screenshot above). But, for the new file type *.otwu or *.ogwu(supported since Origin 2018), you can browse to select an image file for preview; for the old file type *.otw or *.ogw, you are not allowed to set a preview for them.
Construct Worksheet tab
This tab can be used to specify the column designation for the new workbook created from the default system template Origin.otwu(by default, this template has a blank workbook with one sheet).
You can select a pattern from the drop-down list or click + button to add designation symbols to make your own pattern. Click OK button to new a workbook with the designation.
You can also use the check box Set as Default Template to set the template Origin.otwu as default template, but with the column designation you specified in this tab.
If you want to cancel the default behavior above, you can
- Open the New Workbook dialog. Go to System Templates or User Templates tab.
- Select a template, check the check box Set as Default Template.
- Click OK button to save this setting.
Then, the default behavior will be changed as you desired.
